Map Cleaning

As with any work on paper, maps are subject to typical age damage caused by the acidic nature of the paper.  This includes browning/yellowing of the paper (acid burn), brown spotting (foxing), and mat lines (mat burn).  In the case of color maps, the acidity in the paper can be detrimental to the pigment and changes the overall appearance of the piece.  If the pH of the paper is not neutralized, these unsightly issues will worsen.

Other damage we commonly see on maps is mold/mildew growth, tears and paper loss, rippling/curling, creasing, abrasions, yellowed varnish, liquid staining and insect damage.  Acidic mats, acidic backings (including older linens) and tape are also detrimental to a map.

ACA Paper Restoration provides map conservation, map restoration and map cleaning.  We specialize in the restoration of modern and antique maps.  Our map restoration services include map cleaning (including removal of yellowed varnishes), deacidifying, patching, pressing, mold treatment, archival mounting, retouch and coloring.   We also remove backings, mats, and tape, if necessary.
