Painting Restoration

As with any work on paper, paintings are subject to typical age damage caused by the acidic nature of the paper.  This includes browning/yellowing of the paper (acid burn), brown spotting (foxing), and mat lines (mat burn).  In the case of watercolor and gouache paintings, the acidity in the paper can be detrimental to the pigment and changes the overall appearance of the piece.  If the pH of the paper is not neutralized, these unsightly issues will worsen.

Other damage we commonly see on paintings is mold/mildew growth (especially on pastel paintings), tears and paper loss, rippling/curling, creasing, abrasions, liquid staining and insect damage.  Acidic mats, acidic backings and tape are also detrimental to a painting.

ACA Paper Restoration provides painting restoration and painting repair for all works on paper. We regularly restore watercolor paintings, pastel paintings, gouache paintings and others. Cleaning watercolor paintings, cleaning pastel paintings and cleaning gouache paintings is one of our specialties!

Our painting restoration services include painting cleaning, deacidifying, patching and filling, pressing, mold treatment, archival mounting and retouch. We also remove backings, mats, and tape, if necessary. Find out what we can do to enhance and preserve your painting on paper.
