Watercolor Repair

As with any work on paper, watercolor paintings are subject to typical age damage caused by the acidic nature of the paper.   This includes browning/yellowing of the paper (acid burn), brown spotting (foxing), and mat lines (mat burn). In the case of watercolor paintings, the acidity in the paper can be detrimental to the pigment and changes the overall appearance of the piece.   If the pH of the paper is not neutralized, these unsightly issues will worsen.

Other damage we commonly see on watercolor paintings is mold/mildew growth, tears and paper loss, rippling/curling, creasing, abrasions, liquid staining and insect damage.   Acidic mats, acidic backings and tape are also detrimental to a watercolor painting.

ACA Paper Restoration provides watercolor conservation, watercolor restoration and watercolor cleaning.   Cleaning watercolor paintings is one of our specialties. Our watercolor restoration services include watercolor cleaning, deacidifying, patching, pressing, mold treatment, archival mounting and retouch.   We also remove backings, mats, and tape, if necessary.
